SAID BY XAVI HERNANDEZ:
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Barcelona boss said, “I will leave Barcelona in June. We have reached a point of no return. It’s time for change. I think that it’s time to leave. I spoke with the board and the club today. I will leave on the 30th of June.” “I took this decision days ago. I already knew it. But it’s time to make it public. I think the players could not free themselves up. I don’t want to be a problem for the club, but the opposite.” “Right now, if I think with my head and think about the club, the solution and the best thing is for me to leave in June, that is how I feel. We have just agreed that with the president (Joan Laporta). We have a president who is brilliant. Him, Rafa Yuste, (sporting director), Deco…everyone is really capable. I think this decision will help unblocking the team and the mood in here. I just told the president Laporta now. We’ve had a meeting, it was a very human conversation, just with common sense. The trust from them is still fantastic. “But I believe this is the moment to say this. I don’t make my decisions following money, my contract will never be a problem. I just make my choices following my heart. I don’t need anything more.”
BIG PICTURE
Speaking to reporters, Xavi revealed, “On June 30, I will leave the club. It’s a decision I have taken with the president, with the staff.”
The decision comes after recent setbacks, including elimination from the Copa del Rey and a defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final, leaving Barcelona 10 points behind league leaders Real Madrid.
There has been speculation over Xavi’s future at the club in recent weeks after the club lost 4-1 against rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and then bowed out of the Copa del Rey following a humiliating 4-2 defeat against Athletic Club. With the loss against Villarreal on Saturday, the Catalan giants have now leaked nine goals in their last two games.
Acknowledging the recent struggles, Xavi stated, “I am more optimistic than ever with this change of dynamic… we’ll go for La Liga, it’s very difficult, but we will fight.” Players, including midfielder Frenkie de Jong and defender Ronald Araujo, expressed their confidence in the technical team, attributing recent challenges to the players rather than the coach. There is full confidence in the technical team; it’s the fault of the players,” de Jong commented. Xavi thanked Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, for his confidence during his tenure, and despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about the team’s chances to win trophies this season.

The club needs a change of dynamic. Thinking about the club and the players… they play under far too much pressure. It’s best if I leave. I will always give my best with what I have left. I still believe we can complete a great season,” said Xavi as soon as he entered the room. A decision that comes right at the peak of criticism not only against him but against Barcelona as an institution. Hernandez arrived at the club on November 6, 2021 and will not be able to complete three full seasons. During that time, he won the 2022-23 La Liga and the Spanish Supercup in the same season. During the questions segment, a reporter asked Xavi if hypothetically winning the Champions League could make him chance his mind. Xavi said no, his decision is made.
NOW WHAT’S NEXT FOR BARCELONA?
The reigning Spanish champions, who are currently 10 points behind league leaders Girona after Saturday’s result, will aim to bounce back on Wednesday as they take on Osasuna. Joan Laporta and Co. must also now start the search for a new manager.
Gavi is first Barcelona player to react to Xavi’s decision to leave club
Barcelona midfielder Gavi may be out injured but he’s not missing a second of what’s going on at the club.
The midfielder was the first player to respond to news of Xavi’s impending departure from the club in the summer. Xavi shocked most of us by confirming he’s going to step down in the wake of Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat to Villarreal on Saturday. Gavi took to social media with a brief message for his boss and a picture of the two together. “With you until the end, mister,” he wrote on Instagram.
Gavi is not due to return until next season which means there should be a new manager in place by the team he’s fit and available.
The teenager’s absence has been keenly felt by Barcelona since he was ruled out with an ACL injury and has absence has certainly contributed to the team’s underwhelming recent form.

How long was Xavi a manager?
It took four years to wear Pep Guardiola down, three for Luis Enrique to call it a day and, just over two years after taking charge, Xavi Hernández unexpectedly announced he will leave the club at the end of the season after a 5-3 defeat at home to Villarreal in LaLiga.
