King Charles iii Health Diagnosis:
King Charles iii was diagnosed with cancer after undergoing an enlarged prostate surgery, but it was not disclosed what type of cancer it was or how serious the condition is.
During the recent hospital procedure for benign prostatic enlargement, a separate concern about the King charles iii health was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer, the palace stated in a statement.
It is unclear what form of cancer was detected, but the palace said Charles does not have prostate cancer.
Medical Procedures for Enlarged Prostate:
Enlarged prostate cancer is unrelated, and it is relatively common in older men, according to Yale Medicine, occurring in about 80% of men aged 70 and older. King Charles iii turned 75 in November.
Sometimes, this condition can cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, loss of bladder control, or waking up multiple times at night to urinate. In such cases, doctors often recommend transurethral resection, a procedure to remove the excess prostate tissue.
“They go inside and trim some tissue so that you can urinate more effectively, as the problem with the prostate is that it sits just below the bladder and can obstruct urine flow, said Dr. William Oh, Chief Medical Officer of the Prostate Cancer Foundation”
As part of transurethral resection, a scope – a tube with a camera at the end – is inserted through the urethra. This way, the doctor can see the prostate and determine where to remove excess tissue.
The scope could detect cancer in nearby areas, such as the bladder or the urethra, said Dr. Christian Pavlovich, a professor of urology and oncology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Sometimes you’ll have a bladder tumor or something that’s not symptomatic, and you’ll just see it when you go in there,” he said.
Professor Dr. Justin Friedlander, a urological oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center, stated, “A scope can also detect bloody urine,” which may indicate some blood flow from the kidneys. He mentioned it could be a sign of kidney cancer or cancer in the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder.
In other instances, when doctors are analyzing the removed prostate tissue during surgery, they may discover cancerous cells originating from other parts of the body.
“The prostate could be affected by cancers that are not really of prosthetic origin, like a lymphoma — one of those blood tumors — or a cancer of the urothelium, which is the lining of the urethra and bladder,” Pavlovich said. ”
“That would signal the cancer had spread from other organs and was potentially more advanced, Friedlander said”.
Dr. Julio Po-Siang, the head of the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, stated that finding cancerous cells during the process of prostate enlargement is generally uncommon.
“He said that “90 or 95% of the times it’s benign, but you could have a surprise.”
Buckingham Palace’s Statement on Cancer Diagnosis:
On Monday, Buckingham Palace did not disclose the specific procedure Charles underwent for enlarged prostate but had previously described it as “routine.”
Sometimes, instead of transurethral resection, doctors may opt to destroy excess prostate tissue using laser or high-temperature methods, but these procedures are less common.
According to Buckingham Palace, Charles arrived in London on Monday to initiate regular external patient treatments for cancer.
